Nobody in the state of Iowa would describe 2024 as normal. While it gave us more moisture than in years past, it also gave us a very dry second half of the year, which opened the door to different diseases and pests. The best we can do is learn from the lessons learned this past growing season. They are what we must think about as we prepare for 2025.
Bill Backhaus is with BASF, and he talks a bit about what he saw in Iowa this past year.
Backhaus says that success in 2025 will be based on getting the right seed in the right acres, providing them with the right environment, and managing the programs to help those seeds reach their full potential. The base is built on Genetics, and BASF is poised to launch a line of its own traits in 2025.
One of those traits they have developed is a soybean that will be better equipped to do battle against Soybean Cyst Nematode. The plan is to have it approved and ready by 2028.
The key weapons that we have been using against SCN, PI88788 or PEKING genes, could be in danger of losing their efficacy if we don’t find ways to boost their strength or use them improperly.
Backhaus talks about what we can do to maintain the efficacy of those tools.
