In order to be an effective grassroots organization, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association needs leaders who are willing to step up and take on the issues facing the cattle industry. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Leadership Program helps develop those leaders, and participants in the program were sent to Washington D.C. last week. Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) CEO Bryan Whaley and Shelby Cornelius, a young producer and participant in the Iowa Cattlemen’s Leadership Program, discussed the program on the most recent episode of the Beltway Beef Podcast. Whaley said the program is made up of several programs throughout the year that participants must attend.

Whaley said the D.C. portion of the program brings all of what the participants learned together.

Whaley said that, since Iowa has a diverse cattle industry, there are a wide range of issues to tackle.

Program participant Shelby Cornelius said it was definitely an interesting time in the political cycle for them to be in Washington D.C.

Cornelius added that it’s absolutely crucial to have the voices in Washington D.C. defending the cattle industry.
