Making improvements not only in environmental stewardship but also from a cost benefit analysis in the countryside and that harvest is basically winding up the opportunity presents itself to at least try a few things. Iowa Soybean Association Conservation Agronomist Even Brehm said one of the ways to get started is by implementing cover crops to help keep the soil in place.
There are many cost share programs available, including from the Department of Ag and Land Stewardship and Practical Farmers of Iowa. Brehm says that some of those advanced conversations involve reducing tillage with options like strip till.
Brehm says it’s all important in making incremental change and improving our capabilities and production practices going forward.
