Farm bill extension appears likely

A temporary spending bill to avert a government shutdown this month appears more like the legislative vehicle to extend the already expired farm bill, but one Ag Senator says farmers shouldn’t look for any extra help. Iowa’s Chuck Grassley (R-IA) says an extension is coming.

Given that it is unlikely 12 appropriations bills will be passed by then.

Still in question is the length of any farm bill extension—some have proposed 18-months to get the farm bill out of this Congress. Not Senator Grassley.

Grassley has predicted a one-year extension but adds it won’t likely include interim relief to fix outdated price supports and triggers.

Others including the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association have suggested there could be adjustments.

Senator Grassley also was asked for comment on President Biden’s upcoming visit to the Midwest. Grassley was asked how the Biden administration has worked to promote more market competition in agriculture.

Grassley says that more market competition in ag is a positive step forward.

Senator Grassley made his comments on Tuesday morning during his weekly ag conference call with ag broadcasters and reporters.
