The Iowa State Fair is right around the corner, and with that comes the Iowa State Fair Queen competition. Every contestant has a unique journey to the queen contest, and that’s no different for Kylie Langley, this year’s Muscatine County Fair Queen. Langley said her journey to becoming fair queen started by asking one simple question: “Why not?”

“I got nominated by one- I believe it was one of my ag teachers- to apply for the Muscatine County Fair queen,” Langley said. “I just kind of decided that it’d be something fun to try because I’ve never done pageants before. And I just thought, ‘Why not try it?’ The worst thing that I can do is make new friends. And then we were in the interviews, and I was just like, ’Wow, this is really fun, I enjoy this!’  Then I heard my name called and was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I won! That’s awesome!’ It was just super fun.”

As far as what exactly led her to being nominated, Langley said she has strong roots in agriculture.

“During high school, I was active in 4-H and FFA, and I’ve shown cattle, sheep, and goats,” Langley said. “I dabbled in pigs for one year, and I decided that was not for me. During high school, I also participated in volleyball, basketball, track, and women’s wrestling, and then I did two years of softball, but I ended up quitting softball during my second year of high school so I could focus on my livestock. That’s where I felt like my calling really was.”
