The National Pork Board frequently organizes trips to foreign countries in order to help promote U.S. pork and look for areas to differentiate U.S. pork from competitors and add value and opportunity into other markets.
Bob Ruth is a National Pork Board board member who was recently part of an NPB trip to Panama and Colombia to learn about the growth potential in both rising markets. Ruth says that the people of the two countries were eager to interact with U.S. hog producers on the trip.
Ruth says that variety meats, which are not as popular domestically, are primarily sold in export markets.
He says that by being a part of the NPB trip to Panama and Colombia, visiting a foreign market is an eye-opening experience as to how much of a collaborative effort goes into marketing U.S. pork overseas.
The opportunity to market U.S. pork to central and south America has helped American producers in recent years.
