After the midterm elections in November, Republicans control the House while Democrats have control of the senate. Mary Kay Thatcher, senior manager of federal government and industry relations with Syngenta, says that when Congress resumes in 2023 there could be a familiar feel at the United States Capitol despite some newly elected members.
The number one issue in the agriculture sector when it comes to policy is the 2023 Farm Bill. Thatcher says that bipartisan work makes the Farm Bill process possible.
One area that Mary Kay Thatcher thinks will be more heavily addressed during the next session of Congress is that of trade agreements and trade relations. Thatcher says there will be more emphasis on trade deals next year.
With a split Congress, both Democrats and Republicans will have a hard time accomplishing all of their legislative goals in 2023. Mary Kay Thatcher of Syngenta, says that Republicans will be laser focused on oversight during the next session of the House.
Thatcher also thinks that the EPA will continue its push to regulate pesticides which farmers use to treat their crops.
