Soybeans are amazing little seeds. We can do so much with them. Whether it is for feeding humans and animals, fueling our cars, being part of the rubber in tires and shoes, or sealing the road surfaces we drive on; that little bean is everywhere and is an essential part of everyday life around the country and the globe.
So, it should come as no surprise that because of these uses and the hundreds or thousands more that I didn’t mention, the soybean is a big contributor to the American economy. How much so?
Try $124 billion dollars. Yes, a billion with a b.
The United Soybean Board, through the Soy Checkoff, and the National Oilseed Processors Association did an economic impact study to determine the little bean’s contribution to the American economy. Ed Lammers is the Secretary of the United Soybean Board, and he tells us about the numbers they found beyond the $124 billion.
Lammers says it is important for soybean farmers to have these up-to-date numbers, so they can be aware of their work for the American economy while they are in their trucks and combines this fall. It is easy to lose sight of that.
In addition to the uses I mentioned above, Lammers discusses the latest innovations that are being powered by those little beans in the pod.
