As 2023 begins to wind down, members of Congress are already looking to 2024 and what will be a busy year for agriculture in government. Ag focused members of Congress have signaled their hopes of crafting a new five-year farm bill and are trying to create a blueprint to get it done.
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) opened his final ag conference call of the year on Tuesday by delivering his wish list for 2024.
Grassley says that the work on the farm bill needs to be completed early in 2024 to avoid the chaos of election season. He says for that process to begin a couple of roadblocks need to be completely dismantled. The first is a disagreement between the Ag Committee leaders in Congress on how money should be appropriated in the bill.
Grassley says the second sticking point deals with additional funding for food assistance programs.
Senator Grassley made his comments on Tuesday during his final ag conference call of the year with farm broadcasters and reporters.
