We have talked on more than one occasion about speaking up for your industry. This comes in many forms. Yesterday, Andy talked about telling the story of agriculture and putting your face to the story. We have also talked about speaking up when you see misinformation on social media. Don’t be afraid to share what you do, so consumers can see the truth without a doubt.
Another way to do this is through comment periods on policies that will affect the way you run your business. One of those discussions is with the EPA and herbicides. Herbicides are an essential tool in our toolbox to guarantee that we are able to keep our crops healthy and strong. However, there are questions that need to be answered on how they affect the environment and if the damage is worth the success. There is nothing wrong with asking questions. What is wrong is not answering them.
Earlier this year the EPA released their newest herbicide strategy and how it pertains to the Endangered Species Act. American Farm Bureau Director of Government Affairs John Boatright explains how the EPA proposal will work.
There was, originally, a 60-day comment period issued, but there is well over 900 pages of policy proposals. So, the EPA has extended the comment period another month.
Boatright says that all users of conventional herbicides will be affected by this proposal, and it is imperative that you voice your concerns.
