President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill is done and headed the Independence Day signing that he was looking for. After a lengthy process, farmers will now get updated reference prices; improved crop insurance, livestock, and trade programs; and key tax breaks. House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington said the bill offers plenty for the ag industry.
However, Democrats heavily opposed the bill. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries gave a nearly nine-hour speech opposing the Medicaid and SNAP cuts and detailing the impacts those cuts will have on millions of Americans.
Republicans, like House GOP Leader Steve Scalise, argued that the bill would save money for the truly needy with work requirements and other reforms.
The tax bill’s passage temporarily ends the SNAP debate that blocked progress on a new farm bill and funds updates to help struggling producers finally deal with the higher costs and lower prices that have plagued them over the last few years.
