The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Convention and Trade Show is going on in Austin, Texas. There is much for farmers to talk about, especially on the heels of the advancement of two trade pacts, last week. Policy will be discussed, and the future will be looked for during these next few days. On Sunday, President Trump came to make his third straight speech at the annual AFBF convention.

The President was very jubilant coming off the signing of the Phase One trade deal with China and the advancement of the United States ? Mexico ? Canada Agreement (USMCA) through the Senate. President Trump celebrated with a very receptive crowd.

The trade deals, when added to the first phase of a Japanese trade deal, restore some certainty to the marketplace for American farmers. The extent remains to be seen. However, the President promised the best days were yet to come for farmers and ranchers.

There was a lot of cheering and applause from attendees to the President?s 45-minute address to the convention. The President remarked on how excited the crowd seemed to be. He cited a Farm Journal poll, which was cited by the Wall Street Journal, which says that farmer?s approval of President Trump is at an all-time high of 83%. The President quipped that he would like to know who the unhappy 17% are.

The President promised to return to the event in 2021 to speak to the Farmers and Ranchers again.

Trade officials have said they are turning their sites on the European Union and the United Kingdom in hopes of getting a trade pact negotiated there as well. The President has also said he is ready to get right back to the table with China on the next phases of a trade agreement, and the second phase of the trade deal with Japan is set to start negotiations very soon. Meanwhile, an impeachment trial is underway in the Republican-controlled Senate.
